The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has issued a warning about unprecedented heat and extreme weather conditions resulting from climate change in 2024. Secretary-General Celeste Saulo emphasized the urgency of abandoning the ‘path to ruin’ as the past year is projected to be the hottest on record amid surging greenhouse gas emissions. The WMO highlights alarming instances of record rainfall, flooding, and severe cyclones leading to significant human and economic tolls, while the global average surface temperature has already risen 1.54°C since preindustrial times.
