Understanding Female Genital Mutilation: An Overview
Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), or vrouwelijke genitale verminking, involves the partial or total removal of external female genitalia, with practices varying by culture and location. It can include the excision of the clitoris and labia, with severe cases resulting in the partial stitching of the vagina. The World Health Organization (WHO) uses the term ‘female genital mutilation’ to highlight the harmful nature of this practice, contrary to the term ‘circumcision’ used by some. This perspective is shared by the Dutch government, which condemns the practice as mutilation.
