UNESCO Implements Enhanced Protection for Cultural Heritage Sites in Lebanon Amid Ongoing Conflict
UNESCO has announced the temporary enhanced protection of 34 cultural sites in Lebanon at risk from Israeli bombings, providing emergency financial assistance for the preservation of the country’s cultural heritage. Among the sites receiving this protection are the ancient ruins of Baalbek and Tyre, which hold the highest level of immunity against attacks. The decision follows a request from Lebanon and the urging of over 300 cultural figures, while Lebanon’s Prime Minister Najib Mikati termed the move a significant victory against Israeli aggression.
