UNICEF Highlights Children’s Struggles Amid Amazon Drought
More than 420,000 children in the Amazon basin are severely affected by a record-breaking drought, according to UNICEF. Communities in Brazil, Colombia, and Peru are struggling as water supplies dwindle, impacting food access, health care, and schooling. Over 1,700 schools and 760 medical clinics in Brazil alone have become inaccessible due to low river levels, while hundreds more in Colombia and Peru have faced closures. UNICEF’s chief, Catherine Russell, warns of rising malnutrition and infectious diseases, calling for €9.31 million to support these communities with water and health services.
