US Blocks UN Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza Amid Ongoing Conflict
On November 20, 2023, the United States vetoed a UN Security Council resolution demanding an immediate, unconditional ceasefire in Gaza. The draft, supported by 10 elected members, also called for the unconditional release of hostages. US Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood stated that supporting a ceasefire that did not ensure the release of hostages was unacceptable. The resolution received 14 votes in favor but faced strong opposition from Israeli officials, including Ambassador Danny Danon, who labeled the proposal a ‘betrayal.’
