US Hacker Ilya Lichtenstein Sentenced for Massive Bitcoin Heist
Ilya Lichtenstein has been sentenced to five years in U.S. prison for laundering billions from one of the largest cryptocurrency thefts. Pleading guilty for his role in the 2016 Bitfinex hack, Lichtenstein, with assistance from his wife Heather Morgan, used sophisticated techniques to launder nearly 120,000 stolen bitcoins. Initially valued at $70 million, the assets surged to over $4.5 billion by the time of their arrest. Lichtenstein, expressing remorse, aims to redirect his skills to combat cybercrime post-sentence, while Morgan awaits sentencing for her involvement.
