US Tariff Policy: A Continuation of Protectionism Under Trump and Biden
Newly elected President Donald Trump plans to implement tariffs on all foreign goods, continuing a trend established by predecessors Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Obama initiated tariffs on Chinese tires in 2009, citing risks to domestic producers, while escalating tensions led to further tariffs under Trump, particularly on steel and aluminum. Biden has not only maintained these tariffs but also expanded them, attributing increases to China’s unfair trade practices. The tariffs, intended to protect U.S. industries, are projected to cost American households an additional $800 to $1,700 annually.
