Venezuela Releases 956 Prisoners Amid Controversy Over Election

In a new wave of prisoner releases linked to the unrest following Nicolás Maduro’s disputed reelection, Venezuelan authorities announced the release of 956 individuals. This includes recent approvals of 177 and 46 releases, building on previous weeks’ totals. Families of prisoners had urged for their release before Christmas. Over 2,400 citizens were arrested during the unrest. The opposition, led by Edmundo González Urrutia, has been recognized by the US, EU, and other Latin American countries as the legitimate president, escalating tensions with Maduro’s government.
