Vietnamese Court Confirms Death Sentence for Businesswoman Behind Major Financial Scandal
A court in Ho Chi Minh City upheld the death sentence for Truong Mai Lan, former head of a massive real estate company implicated in Vietnam’s largest financial scandal. The judges ruled there was no reason to alter the original verdict, despite her claims of deep remorse. The scandal involved a $27 billion fraud scheme connected to the Saigon Commercial Bank, whose collapse affected thousands of investors. If she returns 75% of the embezzled funds, the death penalty may be commuted to life imprisonment.
