VNG and Aedes Urge Municipalities to House Refugees to Alleviate Pressure at Ter Apel

The Association of Dutch Municipalities (VNG) and housing corporation umbrella Aedes are calling for municipalities to expedite housing for refugees. They propose that each municipality accommodate an average of two households, potentially allowing approximately 1,300 refugees to transition from reception centers. This initiative aims to prevent overcrowding at the Ter Apel registration center, which could exceed 2,000 individuals. VNG Chair Sharon Dijksma emphasizes the need for sustainable housing solutions rather than temporary accommodations, while Aedes Chair Martin van Rijn highlights the urgent housing crisis and the necessity to construct more homes.
