Water Hyacinth Invasion Threatens Lake Naivasha and Local Livelihoods

Lake Naivasha in Kenya is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate due to an invasion of water hyacinth, an invasive species that suffocates fish and hampers fishing activities. The economic impact is severe, costing the global economy over $700 million annually. Efforts are being made to combat the issue, including the introduction of insects that target the plant. A Kenyan company, HyaPak Ecotech, is addressing both the water hyacinth problem and plastic pollution by turning the invasive plant into biodegradable plastic. Local fishermen are now gathering water hyacinth for income as traditional fishing becomes challenging.
