Japan has successfully launched the world’s first wooden satellite, LignoSat, aboard a SpaceX rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. Designed as a 10-centimeter wooden cube, this experimental satellite aims to demonstrate that wood can disintegrate safely upon re-entry, avoiding harmful metal particles that could impact the environment and telecommunications. Researchers will monitor the satellite for signs of deformation and resilience to extreme temperatures, potentially paving the way for a new era of environmentally friendly satellite material, as suggested by astronaut Takao Doi.
