World’s Largest Coral Discovered in Solomon Islands

Researchers recently uncovered the largest known coral in the Pacific Ocean, measuring 32 meters in length and 34 meters in width, located off the coast of the Solomon Islands. Dubbed a ‘mega coral’, it is three times larger than the previous record holder, known as ‘Big Momma’, and even surpasses the size of a blue whale. Unlike typical coral reefs made up of many smaller corals, this is a single massive specimen formed by a complex network of nearly a billion tiny polyps. The finding offers hope amidst global coral bleaching caused by rising sea temperatures.
