World’s Largest Iceberg A23a Begins Its Journey Northward
The British Antarctic Survey has announced that A23a, the largest iceberg in the world, which detached from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986, has finally escaped the ocean floor after being trapped for decades. Measuring around 4,000 square kilometers, it is now moving towards South Georgia where it is expected to encounter warmer waters, leading to its eventual fragmentation and melting. The impact of this iceberg’s movement on the local ecosystem remains uncertain.
