World’s Largest Iceberg, A23a, Drifts North After Decades of Stagnation
The massive iceberg A23a, which broke away from the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf in Antarctica in 1986, has finally begun to drift north after being stuck on the seabed for decades. Recent satellite images show the iceberg, around 4,000 square kilometers in size, moving towards South Georgia where it is expected to break apart and melt due to warmer waters. Oceanographer Andrew Meijers expresses interest in the potential ecological impacts of this movement.
