Zimbabwe Abolishes Death Penalty in Landmark Decision
Zimbabwe has officially abolished the death penalty, following a parliamentary vote in December. President Emmerson Mnangagwa signed the legislation on the last day of 2024. The death penalty, which had not been used since 2005, was still enforced for serious crimes like murder. Justice Minister Ziyambi noted that the death penalty did not reduce crime and that there are few willing to serve as executioners. Amnesty International reported that 60 people were sentenced to death in 2023, but their sentences will now be converted to life imprisonment.
